Night. The last bright streetlamp sputters and dies, turning the world to shadows. The wind whispers. A tree branch scrapes a dark window. A loose pane rattles. It's cold, a chill rising on the back of a breeze.
One window frames this new family like a photograph. Inside it's all earth tones. Warm. Comfortable. So, so perfect. The woman, both mother and beautiful lover. The boy, precocious and accepting. The man, weary but relaxed, his new family around him like a bubble of security. Like they’ve been there all along.
In the darkness under the dead streetlight, a lone figure stares, just watching.
This is wrong, all wrong.
